Obituary for Carl Edward Manear
Carl Edward Manear, age 93, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, Virginia. He passed on, due to complications from pneumonia. Carl was born on May 17, 1919 in Thornton, West Virginia to Bessie Ann Currant and Earl Manear. He graduated from Grafton High School in 1938, and then from Fairmont State University in 1948, with a Masters degree in Education. He proceeded on to Anderson Airplane School in Nashville, Tennessee, and worked for Glen L. Martin in Baltimore, Maryland, where he married his surviving wife of 71 years, Caroline Rose (Tobias) Manear. He was drafted in the army in 1944 where he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Carl was a Sergeant in the army and his was the first unit to go into Tokyo, Japan in 1945, where the Articles of Surrender were held. He was based in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he taught Science in Grafton Junior High School until he was called into the ministry where he faithfully served 6 years in the West Virginia conference; afterwards, he was called to serve churches in Virginia, where he ministered to his various congregations for 21 more years. He served Del Ray, Nokesville, Arlington, Sterling, Crooks Memorial and Main Street First United Methodist Church in Emporia where he retired in 1984. Carl leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Caroline; four grandchildren, Allen Milburn, Jennifer Milburn, Kelly Chapman and Cindy Chapman Cherry; three great grand children , Jayden Cherry, Madison Cherry and Hope Cherry; and also his faithful dog and companion, Pudgie. Carl was preceded in death by his infant daughter Carol Ann Manear, daughter Barbara Manear Chapman and son Edward Lee Manear. He was a member of the American Legion, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Grafton, West Virginia, a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, as well as a 32 degree Shriner. He was a member of the Senior Circle and also member of the Holiday Rambler Recreational Club of which he also served as the Virginia State Chaplin. Pall Bearers will be Milton Wright, Billy Johnson, Walter Robinson, Will Robinson, George Morrison, and George Mosley. Honorary Pall bearers will be the Methodist Men. Services will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church. Visitation will be prior to the funeral services from 2:00 to 3:00.
