Virginia Nelson Hogarth Blythe, 97, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away on January 24, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Algy Blythe, Jr.; her parents, William Hogarth and Margaret Shelton Hogarth; and her siblings, Dorothy Harrison (Calvin), Margaret Ferguson (Eugene), and Dr. William T. Hogarth.
A life-long resident of Greensville County, Virginia was born March 25, 1926. After graduating from Jarratt High School, she began a career in retail, working in and managing the local five and 10-cent store. She was later ‘recruited’ to join the administrative team at Greensville County High School serving as lead bookkeeper—a position she held until her retirement over 25 years later.
Virginia is survived by sister-in-law Mary Hogarth, nephews Robert ‘Bob’ Harrison and William ‘Gene’ Ferguson (Nancy), nieces Shirley Harrison Snow (Dick) and Nancy Ferguson Horne (Michael), and numerous great- and great-great nephews and nieces.
During her retirement years, Virginia served as church treasurer and as a member of the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee at Monumental Methodist Church where she was a member. Virginia’s retirement also included volunteering at the Greensville Memorial Hospital Information Desk and managing the Hospital’s gift shop. She also served as an election poll worker for many years.
Virginia enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, bird-watching, and shopping. She will always be remembered for her impeccable dress, her quick wit and southern sassiness, and her love of an ice-cold fountain Coke.
The family would like to express its gratitude to neighbors Debra, Ashley, and Ron Lipscomb, Sr. for their kindness and caring over the years and particularly during Virginia’s most recent period of illness. The family is also appreciative of the professional staff of Hospice of Virginia and Meals on Wheels for making Virginia feel comfortable and cared for.
The family will receive friends at Echol’s Funeral Home on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow starting at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Shaun Smith officiating. A private interment will immediately follow the service.
