Ray Clifford Mitchell of Emporia, Virginia passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the age of 79.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan Williams Mitchell; his son, Jason A. Mitchell (Tricia); his grandson Colin Wilson Mitchell; and his granddaughter Samantha Kate Mitchell. He is preceded in death by his parents Woodley Wilson Mitchell and Effie Virginia Pair.
Cliff was a US Army Veteran serving in Korea with the 55th Military Police Company. Upon his return and completion of military service he spent over 30 years working for the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Cliff, aka “Donald Duck”, was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He had a natural artistic ability and loved writing and drawing. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the outdoors. In his later years, you would most likely find him attending Colin and Samantha’s sporting events or just relaxing with them at the farm. He could also be found at church services, church events, or with friends and family drinking coffee and playing cards!
Flowers and arrangements will be graciously accepted however if you wish to make a donation in Cliff’s behalf, please do so. He was a staunch supporter of St. Judes Children’s Hospital and locally of the Hospice Support Group of Southside Virginia 222 West York Drive Emporia, VA.
A visitation will be held on Monday March 23, 2026, at Echols Funeral Home from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at Echols Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, starting at 11:00am with Pastor Larry Grizzard officiating. Interment will follow to Greensville Memorial Cemetery.
