Obituary for Peggy Grizzard Powell
November 11, 1935 – July 20, 2024
Peggy Grizzard Powell, 88, of Portsmouth, VA passed away July 20, 2024, at CSL-Churchland House in Portsmouth, VA. She was born in Greensville County, VA to the late Lester J. Grizzard, Sr. and Sallie Taylor Grizzard. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin A. Clary and husband Benjamin N. Powell, infant daughter Wanda Dale Clary, and five of six siblings. She leaves behind her children, Sheila Grizzard (Jessie) of North Chesterfield VA, Nita Hudson (Dannie) of Carson VA, Cyndi Upton (Charlie) of Zuni VA, Butch Clary (Martha) of Emporia VA and Kevin Clary (Christine) of Portsmouth VA, 12 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren, Sister Amelia Bradley of Petersburg VA, Sister-in-Law Rowena Mason of Brookneal VA and Brother-In-Law Thomas Powell of North Chesterfield VA . Also left to cherish her memories are numerus nieces and nephews and cousins.
The family deeply appreciates the excellent care provided by Churchland House Staff and Trinity Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of your choosing.
A graveside service will be held on July 26, 2024, at 11:00 am at Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4438 Independence Church Rd., Emporia, VA 23847 with pastor Rick Ragan officiating.
