In Loving Memory of Michael Hudson Otten (“Shoestring”)
Michael Hudson Otten, affectionately known as “Shoestring,” age 69, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2026.
Born on May 24, 1957, Michael lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, kindness, and a deep love for his family and friends. He was a man who never shied away from honest work and took great pride in providing for those he loved.
Throughout his life, Michael worked many jobs, including helping with the family paper route, working in the log woods, and spending many years as a skilled carpenter. His strong work ethic and willingness to lend a hand earned him the respect of everyone who knew him.
When he wasn’t working, Michael enjoyed, playing horseshoes, woodworking and spending time with family and friends. He loved sharing stories, laughter, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
Michael is survived by ex-wife Sharon Otten, his children, Casy Thomas, A.C. Pegram (Lori), Thomas Otten (Mechelle), Daniel Otten, Mikey Otten (Karla); and his grandchildren, Valerie, Alayna, Blake, Haley, Ethan, Tara, Bentlee, Kenslee and Great Grandchild Jasper. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Satterwhite Smith, and his father, Edmund Lee Otten (“Butch”).
Those who knew Michael will remember his sense of humor, his strength, his hardworking nature, and his willingness to help others whenever he could. His legacy lives on through the lessons he taught, the values he instilled, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
A graveside service will be held Monday, June 22, 2026, starting at 10:00am in Emporia Cemetery with Pastor Troy Green officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Michael’s life.
Though he is no longer with us, his memory will remain in our hearts forever.
