Obituary for Henry Edward Harrell, Jr.
Henry Edward Harrell, Jr. (Ed), 79, went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Edward Harrell, Sr. and Emily Proctor Harrell. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Parker Harrell; his children, Donna Harrell Meland and her husband Mark, Henry Edward Harrell III (Hank) and his wife Donna, and Parker Gray Harrell. Other survivors include his grandchildren Laura Meland Schroeder and her husband Daniel, Anne Pace Meland, Henry Edward Harrell, IV (Edward), and Mary Carmen Harrell; and one sister Elsie Harrell Edwards. Ed graduated from Virginia Tech (’56) where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. After working with Virginia Carolina Chemical in Suffolk, Virginia he began a successful career in banking, ultimately becoming the President of The Citizens National Bank in Emporia, Virginia. Upon retiring from banking, he established Harrell Enterprises where he was a residential contractor. Ed was very committed to his community and served as Chairman of the Board of Greensville Memorial Hospital/Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center, President of the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Hokie Club. He was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Church Council and the Trustees. Ed loved the outdoors, particularly quail hunting with family and friends. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. The family will receive friends Friday, January 11, from 5 to 7 at Echols Funeral Home Chapel, 806 Brunswick Ave., Emporia, Va. After a private interment, a memorial service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 12 at 11:30 am. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to www.Echolsfuneralhome.com
