Harry Murrling Taylor, 95, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away on April 18 surrounded by family and friends.
Born on November 11, 1930, in Lawrenceville, he lived a life marked by devotion—to his country, his community, his church, and most of all, his family.
A proud Korean War veteran, Harry cherished the lifelong friendships he formed during his service and attended many reunions with his Army friends over the years.
For more than 60 years, Harry owned and operated Brunswick Rubber Company, a fixture of the community and a testament to his work ethic and perseverance. He was also a former member of the Lions Club, where he enjoyed serving alongside neighbors and friends.
Harry was a member of Independence United Methodist Church from 1957 until his passing, faithfully serving for many years as Chairman of the Board. He was also a dedicated Sunday school teacher. He was known for his beautiful solos in the church choir and, in earlier years, for singing alongside his brothers. His voice, humor, and steady presence were woven into the life of the congregation.
He enjoyed golf and teasing friends and family. He was deeply loved by his community, his church family, his many friends, and his devoted wife of 71 years, Evangeline.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Murtis T. and Henry Murrling Taylor, his brother, Ray Taylor, his nephew, Jamie Taylor, sisters in law, Winifred Taylor and Mable Taylor, and brother -in-law, William Pearson.
He is survived by his wife, Evangeline, his brothers James, Phil, and Tom (Judy), and his sister-in-law, Pat Taylor, along with many nieces and nephews, and their extended families, who all adored him.
A visitation will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Independence United Methodist Church, followed by a service at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Independence UMC Cemetery Fund.
