Harmon Grayson Mitchell Jr.
August 11, 1941- December 24, 2025
Grayson was preceded in death by his mother Mary Juanita Householder, his father Harmon Grayson Mitchell Sr., and his brother Kerry Dawson Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Loretta Harris Mitchell, and his beloved dog, Maxwell. His daughter Kimberly Mitchell Walton (Darrell), granddaughters Grayson Walton Rawlings (Chase) and Presley Walton Vinson (Lucas), and one great grandson William Knox Rawlings. Son Kenneth Burton Mitchell (Jill) and their children, Grayson Marlene Dawes and Robert Dylan Dawes III. His sister Dale Mitchell Belmonte (Bill). His sister-in-law Cathy Butler Mitchell and his nephew John Dawson Jordan Mitchell. Along with numerous nieces, nephews, and many other extended family members.
In his early years, Grayson fell in love with trucking working for his uncle, William Mitchell. He also drove a truck for Lewis Owens. He was then hired as transportation manager for Kingsberry Homes. After several years, he went to work for Rawlings Truck Line. In 1977, he started Grayson Mitchell, Inc., leasing his first few trucks to Rawlings Truck Line. By the early 80s, Grayson went out on his own purchasing his local terminal and with hard work and dedicated employees, the fleet grew to over 350 trucks, with terminals in Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida. After several years of successful business, he sold the corporation to P&S Transportation in 2012. He continued to work for P&S for several years.
In addition to family and friends, Grayson loved flat bed trucking, big game hunting, riding Harleys across the country, and everything cowboy.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 27th, 2025 at his home, Lion’s Watch, 215 Old Farm Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC at 3pm- until. The funeral service will be held at Echols Funeral Home, 806 Brunswick Avenue, Emporia, VA at 3pm. Interment will follow at his daughter’s, Dakota Lane Farm, 11372 Fortsville Road, Emporia, VA.
