Obituary for George Thomas Powell Sr.
George Thomas Powell was born March 1, 1931, to Thomas and Lila Powell in Southampton County, VA. On September 6, 2025, George passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and son, a testament to his profound impact on those around him.
George married the love of his life Shirley on February 28, 1954, and she remained his rock, his partner, and his best friend throughout his life's journey. He is also survived by his children David Powell, Sr. (Christy), George Powell, Jr and Brenda Sasser (Charles), a living legacy to his enduring love and devotion. George's family tree continues to flourish with 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a sister, Inez Sipe, all of whom were blessed by his presence in their lives. His brother-in-law, Jack Waters, remained a constant source of support and comfort to George until his final days, a shining example of the transformative power of love and loyalty. The small wooden cross that Jack offered to George on his final day remains a poignant reminder of the peace and comfort that faith can bring.
George served his country with honor and distinction in the United States Air Force for ten years, including during the Korean War, and his sense of pride and purpose continued to inspire those around him throughout his life. After his military retirement, George and his family returned to Emporia, VA, where he continued to serve his community in various roles, including as animal control officer, earning him the affectionate nickname 'the dog man.' George's tireless commitment to serving others left an indelible mark on the lives of all those he touched.
The Memorial service for George will be at Echols Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday September 13, 2025 at 2pm, a celebration of his life, his love, and his enduring legacy. Family will receive visitors at the chapel one hour prior to service, a time to share stories, memories, and reflections on the incredible life of George Thomas Powell.
