Obituary for Anne Lucille Harrell Keedwell
Mrs. Anne Lucille Harrell Keedwell, 93, of Emporia, VA, died in Emporia December 19, 2012. She was the widow of Stuart Grant Keedwell to whom she was married 67 years. A native of Emporia, she was born February 2, 1919, the daughter of the late Lyman Christian Harrell, Sr., and Mattie Land Harrell. A life-long resident of Emporia, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Keedwell attended Randolph Macon Woman’s College. Active in Emporia, she was a past member of the Riparian Woman’s Club, the Emporia Book Club, and the Hicksford Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution which she served as regent. She was a past member of the Village View Foundation Board and was an avid gardener. A longtime communicant of Christ Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Women of the Church and served on the Altar Guild. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Keedwell was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Randolph Keedwell, and sisters, Nancy Harrell Butler, Martha Harrell Hutchison, Elizabeth Harrell Somer, and a brother, Lyman Christian Harrell, Jr. She is survived by six daughters, Shirley Virginia Keedwell Smith and her husband, Thomas Eugene Smith, of Spartanburg, SC; Elizabeth Grant Keedwell Thrower and her husband, Ronnie Wilson Thrower, of Emporia; Lucille Land Keedwell Allen and her husband, Michael Lloyd Allen of Richmond; Mary Katherine Keedwell Small and her husband, James Edward Small, of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Marth Stuart Keedwell Ligon and her husband, Jeffrey Lynn Ligon of Richmond, and Nancy Harrell Keedwell Ferguson and her husband, William Eugene Ferguson, of Jarratt. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; Elizabeth Anne Smith, and her husband, Dr. John Matthew Smith; Christopher Thomas Smith and his wife, Mary Catherine Smith; Brian Stuart Thrower and his wife, Kimberly Anne Thrower; Grant Wilson Thrower, Anne Randolph McCurry and her husband, Eric Ryan Mc Curry; Michael Stuart Allen and his wife, Angela Marita Allen; jonathan Edward Small and his wife, Jennifer Lynn Small; Matthew Scott Small; Catherine Benton Ligon; Jeffrey Leonard Ligon; nine great-grandchildren, Michael Thomas Smith, Mattison Anne Smith, Frances McCown Smith, Emily Linder Smith, Catherine Keedwell Smith, Ayden Stuart Thrower, Caleb James Bradshaw, Marita Lucille Allen, and Lucy Christine McCurry; a sister-in-law, Duane Curtis Harrell; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express appreciation to longtime friend and caregiver, Peggy Branch. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 22, at Christ Anglican Church, Emporia, at 1 p.m. with interment following at Emporia Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Village View, 221 Briggs St., Emporia, Friday, December 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Village View Foundation c/o Mrs. Nancy Ferguson, Treasurer, 409 Jarratt Avenue, Jarratt, VA 23867 or the charity of your choice.
